Mleiha day trip from Sharjah by car: the route and what to see
Mleiha is the desert within easy reach of Sharjah city, and it comes with a long history: evidence of people living here more than 200,000 years ago, rock outcrops full of marine fossils, and dunes, all inside one national park. From our office in Al Qasimiya it is about 63 km by road, about 50 minutes without traffic. This guide covers the route, what to see, what a rental car may and may not do in the desert, and when to go.
Where Mleiha is and how to drive there
Mleiha is in Sharjah’s Central Region. Visit Sharjah places the Mleiha Archaeological Centre near Jebel Faya, 65 km south-east of Sharjah city. From our office the mapping route is about 63 km and about 50 minutes, along the Sharjah–Kalba road (E102).

What to see in Mleiha
Start in the museum, then go out with a guide, because the main sites are spread across Mleiha National Park. The park covers 34.2 sq km, was established by Emiri decree and is managed by Shurooq.
- Mleiha Archaeological Centre: a museum and visitor centre with artefacts, interactive displays and a café. Guided tours leave from here for the Valley of the Caves, ancient tombs and Jebel Buhais.
- Faya Palaeolandscape: inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025. The property preserves evidence of human occupation from 210,000 to 6,000 years ago. The museum at the centre is the place to see what was found.
- Fossil Rock: a rock outcrop holding marine fossils, rising out of the dunes. It is reached across the sand, so do not drive there: go on one of the centre’s dune tours or with a licensed tour operator.
- Camel Rock: a wind-carved outcrop shaped like a camel’s head. It is also a stop on the centre’s dune tours, not a place to drive to.
- Staying overnight: the park runs camping, and glamping in winter only. Both are booked through the official booking page.
A simple plan for the day
- Arrive in the afternoon and start in the museum, which gives the sites their context.
- Join a guided tour to the archaeological sites, or a dune tour to Camel Rock and Fossil Rock in the centre’s vehicles.
- Stay for sunset, then for stargazing if an evening is scheduled.
- Drive back to Sharjah on the same road.
Ticket prices and opening times change, so check them and book on the official booking page before you leave.
Desert driving in a rental car: what is and isn’t allowed
Off-road driving is not allowed in Darb Rent cars. Please stay on paved roads; desert sand, dunes and unpaved tracks are off-limits.
You do not need to drive on sand to see Mleiha. Drive to the Mleiha Archaeological Centre by road and park there. The dune tours to Camel Rock and Fossil Rock are run by the centre with its own guides and 4x4 vehicles, so you ride with them.
- Inside the park: the decree that governs the park prohibits operating vehicles in it without a permit from the competent authority, along with hunting and damaging geological formations.
- Fossil Rock and Camel Rock: visit them on the centre’s tours or with a licensed tour operator, never in the rental car.
- Wadis in the rain: entering a flowing wadi is a AED 2,000 fine with 23 black points and a 60-day impound, so stay on the road.
If you want a taller, roomier car for the road and the family, see our SUVs for rent in Sharjah.
Best time to visit Mleiha
Go in the cooler months, and plan the outdoor part for late afternoon. No official body publishes a single “best time”, but what the park publishes about its activities points that way.
- Season: the park’s glamping site operates in winter only, November to April.
- Sunset: the last booking for the dune tours is taken 1 hour before sunset, so book early if you want the sunset from the rocks.
- After dark: the park runs stargazing evenings, which are booked online.
Take plenty of water and a hat. For a longer day out to the coast, see the Khor Fakkan road trip; for places in the city, see things to do in Sharjah.
