Sharjah traffic fines: how to check, pay and get the discount
Traffic fines issued in Sharjah are checked and paid through the Ministry of Interior, not on the Sharjah Police website. Sharjah also has a standing early-payment discount. This guide covers the official channels, the discount, the common fines and black points, and what happens when the car is rented.
How to check Sharjah traffic fines
Use the Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Fines Payment service. It is the federal service for fines on vehicles and drivers, and it finds them by traffic code, vehicle plate or driving licence.
- Open the service on the MOI website or in the MOI UAE app. Access is with UAE Pass.
- Search by the traffic code (the traffic file number), the plate details, or the driving licence number.
- The list shows each fine with its amount. Select the ones you want to pay.
The Government of Sharjah’s Digital Sharjah platform also lists a traffic fines payment service. The UAE government portal names the MOI website and the MOI UAE app among the channels for paying fines online.
Many guides point to a fines inquiry on the Sharjah Police website. When we checked, the Sharjah Police service list had no traffic fines inquiry or payment service. Parking fines are separate: they belong to the municipality, and the Sharjah parking guide explains how to pay them.
How to pay Sharjah traffic fines
Pay in the same MOI service, by credit card or with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay. The ministry lists no federal service fee, and you get a receipt at the end.
- Black points: when a fine that carries points is paid, the points are transferred to the driving licence.
- Impound: some violations also carry a vehicle impound period. The MOI lets you pay instead of impound for eligible violations, at AED 100 a day for a light vehicle.
- In person: MOI service centres are the non-digital channel.
Sharjah traffic fines discount: the current scheme
Sharjah gives 35% off a traffic fine paid within 60 days of the violation, and 25% off if it is paid later but within one year. This is a standing policy of the Sharjah Executive Council, not a seasonal offer.
| When you pay | Discount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Within 60 days of the violation | 35% | The fine, the impoundment period, vehicle storage fees and late penalties |
| After 60 days and within one year | 25% | The fine only |
| After one year | None | Paid in full |
The Council approved the policy on 8 July 2025, with the same percentages it first applied from 1 April 2023. Serious violations are excluded; the announcements do not list which ones. We found no official notice ending the scheme, and no end date was announced.
One-off reductions are different. Sharjah has announced them for specific occasions, such as the 50% reduction that ran from 21 November 2021 to 31 January 2022. No one-off discount for individual drivers was officially active when we last checked, so treat any “50% off” claim with caution unless it appears on an official page.
Common traffic fines and black points
Fines and black points are federal, so they are the same in Sharjah as in the rest of the UAE. Speeding costs AED 300 for up to 20 km/h over the limit and rises to AED 3,000, 23 black points and a 60-day impound above 80 km/h over.
| Violation | Fine | Black points | Vehicle impound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speeding by up to 20 km/h | AED 300 | None | None |
| Speeding by up to 30 km/h | AED 600 | None | None |
| Speeding by up to 40 km/h | AED 700 | None | None |
| Speeding by up to 50 km/h | AED 1,000 | None | None |
| Speeding by up to 60 km/h | AED 1,500 | 6 | 15 days |
| Speeding by more than 60 km/h | AED 2,000 | 12 | 30 days |
| Speeding by more than 80 km/h | AED 3,000 | 23 | 60 days |
| Crossing a red light | AED 1,000 | 12 | 30 days |
| Using a phone or being distracted | AED 800 | 4 | None |
| Not wearing a seat belt | AED 400 | 4 | None |
| Not leaving a safe distance | AED 400 | 4 | None |
| Sudden swerving | AED 1,000 | 4 | None |
| No child seat for a child under 4 | AED 400 | None | None |
| Child under 10 or under 145 cm in the front seat | AED 400 | None | None |
| Entering a flowing wadi | AED 2,000 | 23 | 60 days |
The schedule fines any speed above the limit, starting with the first band. No official Sharjah source states a radar tolerance, so drive to the posted limit.
How black points work
- The limit is 24 points within a year. Reaching it means the licence is withheld for 3 months the first time, 6 months the second and 12 months the third.
- Points are deleted 12 months after the fine is paid.
- Passing an approved driving-institute course before reaching the limit removes 8 points, once a year.
- Points count for violations anywhere in the UAE.
Traffic fines on a rental car
A fine is recorded against the vehicle, so on a rental the notice goes to the rental company first. Tolls and fines are not included in the rental rate and are charged separately by the rental company.
Black points follow the driver, not the company. The traffic rules give the actual driver a month to come forward and take the fine and its points, and the MOI has a service for car rental offices that transfers a violation and its black points to the licence of the person who had the car at the time.
- Ask the team on WhatsApp how fines are billed before you rent.
- Keep your rental agreement: it shows the dates and times the car was with you.
- If you get a fine notice or see a camera flash, tell the team early. The 35% discount depends on paying within 60 days.
Tolls work in a similar way; see Salik and Darb tolls.
